Classes and Instruction

We base our course-offerings on the underlying belief that most individuals want to be life-long learners. As such, we offer classes and instruction for all ages during the Fall and Spring, and for children during the Summer. For the highest level of learning, all Museum instructors are Certified Art Teachers and/or Art Professionals.

Each Fall Art class will meet once a week for six weeks.
 

Classes for Children and Families:

After School Art
October 4 – November 8 (Mondays), 4:30 - 5:30pm
Instructor: Tara Campbell
Cost: FREE for Members, $5 Non-Members per visit

This is a program designed for the parent and child to learn together. Lessons vary in medium and can be adapted for use at home. Each class is an independent lesson. Registration is not required.


Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture (Ages 5-13)
October 5 – November 9 (Tuesdays), 4:30 - 6:30pm
Instructor: Marcia Anderson
Cost: $90 Members, $105 Non-Members

Children will experiment with a variety of materials as they learn drawing, painting and clay techniques.
 


Classes for Teens and Adults:

Art History
October 5 – November 9 (Tuesdays), 6:00 - 8:00pm
Instructor: Adam Justice
Cost: FREE for Members, $60 Non-Members

Art History with a twist! This is art history as it pertains to the permanent collection of the Polk Museum of Art. If you've ever wondered what we’ve got, how it’s important or why it’s considered Museum quality art, this class is for you. From Pre-Columbian through contemporary, don't miss this opportunity to get to know the art of PMoA! Class has PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and is open to questions and discussion.


Mixed Media (Junk Assemblage)
October 5 – November 9 (Tuesdays), 6:00 - 9:00pm
Instructor: Paul Peterson
Cost: $100 Members, $115 Non-Members

Create works that mix a wide variety of objects and materials. Challenge yourself to become comfortable with mixing found objects such as computer parts and paint to create fun and expressive artwork.


Acrylic Painting
October 5 – November 9 (Tuesdays), 6:00 - 9:00pm
Instructor: Rick Olivo
Cost: $130 Members, $145 Non-Members

Learn to paint with this versatile and user friendly medium. Participants will learn color mixing, the use of brushes, textures and mediums. Handling the paint and mediums will be explained and demonstrated in a very relaxed and casual setting. Students of all levels welcomed. Class is limited to 15 students.


Yoga Among the Art
October 5 – November 9 (Tuesdays), 6:30 - 7:30pm
Instructor: Brie Peterson
Cost: $60 Members, $75 Non-Members

Build strength, increase flexibility and develop balance while connecting mind, body and spirit. Through breathing techniques and postures, students will learn to revitalize the body, rejuvenate the spirit and calm the mind. Class held in the gallery. Students must supply their own mat.


Digital Photography 101
October 5 – November 9 (Tuesdays), 6:00 - 9:00pm
Instructor: Gregory Mills
Cost: $100 Members, $115 Non-Members

Learn basics of digital photography. Which camera is best for you, how to get the best picture, uploading your photos onto the computer, editing your photos and how to share them. Class is limited to 10 students.


Intermediate Digital Photography
October 5 – November 9 (Tuesdays), 6:00 - 9:00pm
Instructor: Rick Runion
Cost: $90 Members, $105 Non-Members

A user friendly course designed to further student’s knowledge of the digital camera and the editing capabilities of Adobe Photoshop. Students must supply their own digital camera and are encouraged to bring their own laptop with Adobe Photoshop installed if possible. Class is limited to 15 students.


Self Portraits – Mixed Media
October 7 – November 11 (Thursdays), 6:00 - 9:00pm
Instructor: Cecilia Brouillett
Cost: $100 Members, $115 Non-Members



Life Drawing

October 7 – November 11 (Thursdays), 6:00 - 9:00pm
Instructor: Nancy Cockerham
Cost: $115 Members, $130 Non-Members

Discover the fine art of life drawing in this popular class, open to students of all levels. Draw the human figure from a live nude model using various media. (Students under the age of 18 must have written parental consent to participate) Class is limited to 15 students.



Chinese Brush Painting

October 9 – November 13 (Saturdays), 10:00am – 1:00pm
Instructor: Wendy Ann De Rycke
Cost: $130 Members, $145 Non-Members

Learn techniques and brush strokes of the ancient art form of Chinese Brush Painting. Each object that you learn to paint has its own symbolism, legends and charm associated with the Chinese Culture.
 


Film Acting Classes for All
(Ages 8 & up)
October 9 – November 13 (Saturdays), 10:00am – noon
Instructor: Rick Olivo
Cost: $100 Members, $115 Non-Members

Students learn fundamentals of acting using body, imagination, and voice specialized for use on film and video. This class is open to children, teens, and adults.

Materials:
Basic materials will be provided unless otherwise noted. Students are welcome to bring their own materials if preferred. 
 


Refunds:
If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be available. If a class is not canceled and refund is requested, a reimbursement will be made in full up to seven days prior to the class starting date. No reimbursement will be made after the seven-day period.



Meet the Instructors:
All classes are taught by Certified Art Teachers and/or Art Professionals. All teachers and Museum staff are background checked through the Jessica Lunsford Act.
