PMoA Wins Be More Award from WEDU

LAKELAND, FL. – At a luncheon held on Thursday, January 14, Polk Museum of Art was presented with a WEDU Be More Award. The Museum won in the category of Be More Enriched, a special category created this year for cultural arts organizations.

The Museum was honored with the award primarily because of its Art-O-Mat, a refurbished cigarette machine that dispenses original artworks the size of cigarette boxes. The Art-O-Mat was acquired by the Museum and installed as a way to increase awareness of the Museum and its role within the community, to add an interactive element to the Museum experience, and to encourage art appreciation, creation, and collecting by people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds.

As a winner of a WEDU Be More Award, Polk Museum of Art will be featured in a segment of an hour-long, prime-time special that will air on WEDU on February 25 at 9:00pm.

The WEDU Be More Awards were created by WEDU, one of the Tampa Bay area PBS affiliates, five years ago as a way to honor local non-profits for the work they do in the community. The Awards are often coined as the Academy Awards of the non-profit world, and are given to organizations that show outstanding dedication to their mission, development programs, and creative energy. This local program has become so successful that PBS has adopted its model, and PBS affiliates around the country are now beginning to present Be More Awards in their communities.
